Concept for Bountiful Handcart Days Show

Western Bluffs 11x14 Oil

The Bountiful Handcart Days painting is in transit and should arrive in Utah by Thursday.

The above images show how this painting came about. Right outside our front door are the bluffs seen in the first image. I thought it would be neet to create a painting that was mostly about the landscape, but included pioneer wagons. After searching online I found some references and used them in my concept image, then painted a 8x10 study, and the final 11x14 painting. However, I decided my wagon idea wasn't going to work in the final image. I kept re-working the wagons only to stump myself everytime. So, although I wish it could have worked, I like the painting as a reference to the western bluffs our pioneer ancestors crossed while making their westward movement to the Salt Lake Valley.

Rolling Clouds Plein Air Study No. 3, 6x8 Oil

Oh how I love plein air. I like to call it my "no fuss" painting. There is just something about forcing yourself to be very direct and not worry if things aren't perfect. I like that these are simply studies and all I'm trying to do is capture color, light, and shape. This painting was completed in about 15 minutes. The rolling clouds in this subject were too good to pass up, so with a little bit of quick painting this study came about.

Plein Air Cottonwoods with Red Barn 8x8 Oil

This painting is of a great view looking out one of our north facing windows.

I really liked how brilliant the white/gold brush contrasted with the rich green trees.

Morning Grazing 8x10 Oil

While visiting Manzanita, Oregon we took a drive

and saw these cows grazing in the sun.

What beautiful country and landscape in Manzanita!

Blue Barn with Sheep 8x10 Oil

This scene was from Spring City, Utah. I really liked the way the sun backlit the trees and cast blue grey shadows over this little barn and grazing sheep.

Definitely Different

Trying to paint with a 7 month old crawling around at my feet is something else. Why is it that they can be more interested in blank canvases, cords, and frames than great toys! Any suggestions?

SOLD as a pair

A buyer recently purchased these paintings as a pair at Apple Frame Gallery. Late Summer Pastures was painted in Spring City, UT at a plein air painting competition and took two mornings to complete. The second, Twin Sisters, was done in the studio from photographs taken after the plein air painting event. I hope she enjoys them as much as I do!

Well, it was short lived, but I'm glad my work was accepted by the Meyer Gallery! Due to their high season and nothing selling, the gallery can no longer house my work. The Meyer Gallery

It's official, my work can also be seen at the Meyer Gallery in Park City, Utah!

In late November I was checking my e-mail and was about to delete my spam folder when I noticed an e-mail from the Meyer Gallery captioned "your artwork." I thought, what is that....I seriously thought about just deleting the entire inbox, which mind you only had two e-mails total in it. Good thing I didn't becuase sure enough it was a note from the gallery owner Susan Meyer saying she saw my work on Apple Frame's website and really liked it. A phone call later it was set, I was to bring 8 new paintings to the Meyer Gallery over Christmas break. Needless to say it was a busy two months but it all came together.

After bringing my work to Park City and taking a stroll through the other galleries I now recognize where I need to be heading as an artist. I've got lots to improve, but at least I'm on my way.

5th Annual Spring City Plein Air Painters Competition

Two weeks ago I participated in the 4th Annual Spring City Plein Air Painters Competition in Spring City, Utah. What a great experience! Over 50 artists particpiated in this event, some of which included:

Susan Gallacher,Gary Smith (Painted murals in the Nauvoo Temple), Seth Winegar, Simon Winegar (Gave me my first kiss, if you haven’t heard the story I’ll tell you sometime--Gross!) Bonnie Conrad, George Handrahan, Sean Diediker, Ron Richmond, and Doug Braithwaite--to name a few.

There were many great seasoned and new artists. Over the course of three days artists could paint up to 5 images within Sanpete County. I arrived a day late and was able to finish 3 paintings in 2 days. Aside from beating the intense heat and having my easle completely blow over in a wind burst, it was an all around successful event! Can't wait for next year-

I had several artists comment this painting (image of cottonwood trees with green foreground in brown frame) was in their top 5 for the show!

My painting is the bottom left image. Done in 1-hr, not too shabby-

Gearing up for the Spring City Plein Air Competition

In preparation for the 4th Annual Spring City Plein Air Painting Competition (that's a mouthful!) I decided I better get out and actually paint out doors. I learned a lot on these practice trips. Plein Air painting is all about surviving the elements. I have about four different tan lines from the sun beating down on my neck, my easle does not survive windy situations, and securing my canvas on the easel is a MUST! This painting of Cannon Beach had a nice start, but it took a nose dive into the sand as Hyrum and I were packing up. Dugh! It might help if I secure the canvas to the easel box.

Women take on a variety of roles each day, from home-maker to teacher to mother. Love, compassion, and faith are essential to accomplishing the many acts of service (or tasks) women perform. The bouquet of flowers depicted takes on meaning when we understand that the flowers, like the women in our lives, are composed of deeper qualities that don't always meet the eye. The lily symbolizes purity. The petals of the iris represent wisdom and valor. Women too internalize these qualities, and they are admired for the beautiful womanhood they represent. -Jean Place.

Suzie's Blue Bonnet remenices our pioneer heritage. I wanted to create an image that was subtle, intimate and allowed the viewer to reflect what it would have been like for this young girl to cross the plains. I enjoy her soft gaze at the lemon yellow flowers and ponder her thoughts of the home she left behind and the journey that lies for her ahead.
